Someone sent you a .heic file and your computer just shrugged. Drop it here to see the photo right away, zoom into the details, and save a JPG copy if you need one.

This tool runs entirely in the browser: photos are decoded and encoded on the visitor’s device and are never uploaded. It is free, needs no sign-up and works offline after the first visit.

## How to use it

1. Drop a HEIC file onto the box above, or tap **Choose files**. Several files open as a set you can flick through.
2. The photo appears on screen in a moment. Zoom in to check focus, faces or small print.
3. Want a copy in a friendlier format? Pick **JPG** or **PNG** and download it.

## Just want to see the photo?

Not every HEIC file needs converting. Sometimes you only want to know what's in it: is that the right receipt, the blurry group shot or the good one, the screenshot your colleague swore they sent? Installing codecs or signing up to a converter for a two-second look is silly. This viewer opens the file in a browser tab and that's it.

It decodes HEIC and HEIF with a WebAssembly build of libheif, the same engine our converters use. That includes the awkward cases: iPhone grid images (where the photo is stored as tiles), 10-bit colour and images with transparency.

## Where this helps most

| Device | Opens HEIC on its own? | With this viewer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Windows 10/11 | Only with Microsoft's extensions | Yes, in any browser |
| Chromebook | Varies | Yes, in Chrome |
| Android | Many Android 10+ phones, depends on app | Yes, in any browser |
| Mac | Yes, Preview and Photos | Yes, handy on shared or locked-down Macs |
| Work PC you can't install on | Usually not | Yes, no admin rights needed |

The last row is the quiet favourite. Office laptops often block the Microsoft Store, so the official extensions are off the table. A browser tab is not.

## Zoom in properly

Phone photos are big. A 12 MP iPhone shot is 4032 × 3024 pixels, far more than your screen shows at once. Zoom in to check whether the text on a whiteboard is readable, whether someone blinked, or whether a scanned document is sharp enough to send. You're looking at the real decoded pixels, not a blurry preview thumbnail.

Colours match your phone too. iPhone photos are captured in Display P3, and the viewer respects that, so reds and greens don't look washed out.

## Keep a copy you can actually use

If the photo is a keeper, save it as a JPG (default quality 90) or a lossless PNG. Both open everywhere. Got a whole folder to deal with instead of one file? The [HEIC to JPG converter](https://ihateheic.com/heic-to-jpg) or the [batch HEIC converter](https://ihateheic.com/batch-heic-converter) are faster for that.

Curious where and when the photo was taken? The [HEIC metadata viewer](https://ihateheic.com/heic-metadata-viewer) shows the camera, date, exposure and location data hiding inside.

## Private, even for a quick peek

Viewing is still processing, so it's worth saying: nothing leaves your device. Once the page has loaded you can switch on airplane mode and keep opening files. If you open HEIC photos on this computer a lot, install the page as an app and it'll be there offline next time. On Windows, our guide to [opening HEIC on Windows](https://ihateheic.com/how-to-open-heic-on-windows) covers the permanent fixes too.

## FAQ

### How do I open a HEIC file without installing anything?

Open this page in any modern browser and drop the file in. The decoder is part of the page itself, so there is no app, plug-in or codec to install.

### Can I view HEIC files on a Chromebook?

Yes. Chrome on ChromeOS runs the viewer like any other web page. Pick the file from the Files app or Google Drive downloads and it opens straight away.

### Why won't Windows show my HEIC photos?

Windows 10 and 11 need Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions and usually the paid HEVC Video Extensions to display HEIC. This viewer skips all that because it decodes the file in the browser.

### Is my photo uploaded when I view it?

No. The file is read and decoded on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the photo is gone from memory when you close the tab.

### Can I zoom in on a HEIC photo?

Yes. Zoom in to inspect detail at full resolution, then zoom back out to see the whole frame.

### Does viewing a HEIC change or damage the file?

No. Viewing only reads the file. Your original stays exactly as it was, and any JPG you save is a separate copy.

### Will it open HEIC files on Android?

Yes. Many Android phones can show HEIC already, but support varies by phone and app. This viewer works in Chrome, Firefox or Edge on Android regardless.
