The form says "JPEG only" and your iPhone gave you HEIC. Convert them here in a couple of clicks, right on your own device.

This tool runs entirely in the browser: photos are decoded and encoded on the visitor’s device and are never uploaded. It is free, needs no sign-up and works offline after the first visit.

## How to use it

1. Drop your HEIC photos above, or tap **Choose files**. Pasting from the clipboard and picking a whole folder work too.
2. Each photo becomes a JPEG on your device as soon as it lands. Adjust **Quality** or **Metadata** and hit **Apply** to redo the batch.
3. Download the JPEGs one by one or as a single **ZIP**. On iPhone, tap **Save** to put them back in Photos.

## JPEG, JPG: same format, two spellings

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the committee that designed the format. The file itself is the same whether it's called `photo.jpeg` or `photo.jpg`. The shorter spelling exists because early versions of Windows only allowed three-letter file extensions, and the habit stuck.

So if you searched for "HEIC to JPEG" and landed on a page that saves `.jpg` files, nothing is wrong. You're getting a standard JPEG that any "JPEG only" system will accept.

## Where you'll see "JPEG" instead of "JPG"

The longer name tends to appear in official or technical places:

- **Windows and macOS** describe the file type as "JPEG image" in File Explorer and Finder, even when the name ends in .jpg.
- **Upload forms** for visas, job applications, schools and government portals often say "JPEG format only".
- **Cameras** usually offer "JPEG" and "RAW" as quality settings.
- **Web servers** label the file `image/jpeg`, whatever the extension.

All of them mean the same format you get from this converter.

## What if a form rejects .jpg?

It's rare, but some badly built forms check the extension literally. Rename the file from `.jpg` to `.jpeg` and try again. Renaming is safe here because the contents are already JPEG. (Renaming a `.heic` file to `.jpeg` is not safe: the file is still HEIC inside and will be rejected or show as broken.)

If the form complains about size rather than type, send your photos through [Compress HEIC](https://ihateheic.com/compress-heic) instead. It outputs JPEG at the quality needed to fit a limit such as 1 MB, using decimal megabytes so it passes either way the form counts.

## How the conversion works

Your browser does all the work. A WebAssembly copy of libheif decodes the HEIC, and Web Workers encode JPEGs in parallel. No file is sent anywhere, there's no account, and there's no watermark stamped on the result. If you're on a train with flaky signal, it keeps working because the app is cached after your first visit.

Colours are handled carefully too. iPhone photos are captured in Display P3, so we embed that profile in the JPEG. If an older program shows the colours a bit flat, switch **Colour** to sRGB.

## Converting lots of photos

Drop a whole folder on desktop, or select hundreds of photos at once. You can pause, resume and retry any file that failed, then download one ZIP. For a full camera roll, the [HEIC to JPG batch tool](https://ihateheic.com/heic-to-jpg-batch) puts those controls front and centre.

Still on Windows and want to open HEIC files directly? Our page on [converting HEIC for Windows](https://ihateheic.com/convert-heic-for-windows) covers the options.

## FAQ

### Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. JPEG and JPG are two names for exactly the same image format. Any app or form that accepts one accepts the other.

### Why do my converted files end in .jpg instead of .jpeg?

The .jpg extension is the most widely recognised spelling, so that's what we use. If a system insists on .jpeg, rename the file. Nothing inside changes and the image stays valid.

### Can I convert HEIC to JPEG on Windows without installing anything?

Yes. Open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox and drop your files in. Windows would otherwise need Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions and usually the paid HEVC Video Extensions just to open HEIC.

### Will the JPEG be accepted by upload forms?

JPEG is the most widely accepted photo format on the web, so almost every form takes it. If the form also has a size limit, use the compress tool to hit an exact target like 500 KB.

### Do I lose quality converting HEIC to JPEG?

A little, because JPEG compresses less efficiently, but at the default quality of 88 you won't see it. Raise the slider to 95 if you plan to edit the photos later.

### Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with WebAssembly, so the files never travel over the network. Once the page has loaded you can even go offline.

### What happens to the GPS location in my photos?

It's removed by default, while the date and camera details stay. You can keep everything or strip everything in the Metadata settings.
